Discipline is the Key You Don’t Have (Yet)

If you want to do anything of value you will have to do it for an extended period of time.

That means you will have to develop discipline to keep doing it despite assured doubts and obstacles.

If you don’t read books, it’s because you lack discipline.

If you can’t clean your room, it’s because you lack discipline.

If you don’t have a girlfriend/boyfriend, it’s because you lack discipline.

It’s what makes you go through the hard parts of building a life you want for yourself.

It’s what will separate you from the majority of people.

It’s what will ensure you win at the game called life.

The sooner you start playing, the sooner you can start winning.

Discipline is a superpower.

What separates the successful from unsuccessful, talented from talentless, wealthy from poor, doers from has-beens?

It is the fact that achievers have the strength to do the things that are uncomfortable and can withstand doing them for long enough without seeing any immediate results.

That takes - discipline.

Why You Are Not Disciplined

Before we dive into how to become disciplined, let's address why many of us struggle with discipline in the first place.

Distractions and Instant Gratification

In the age of smartphones and endless entertainment, distractions are everywhere.

It's easy to procrastinate or give in to instant gratification, whether it's binge-watching TV shows, scrolling through social media, or indulging in junk food.

These distractions provide short-term pleasure but hinder long-term discipline.

Lack of Clear Goals

Discipline is often born from a strong sense of purpose and clear goals.

If you lack a well-defined objective or a vision for your future, it's challenging to summon the motivation needed to stay disciplined.

Fear of Failure

The fear of failure can be paralyzing.

Many people avoid discipline because they're afraid of falling short of their goals.

This fear can be so overwhelming that they never start in the first place.

Procrastination

Procrastination is the arch-nemesis of discipline.

It's the art of delaying essential tasks and choosing short term comfort over long term progress.

It's a habit that's hard to break.

How to Become Disciplined

Now, let's address the million dollar question.

How can you become more disciplined?

I have created a list of 7 actionable steps you can follow to get better at doing what you said you’ll do.

Try being systematic about it.

If you have never done this before, focus on one point per day.

There are seven so it will take you a week to go through all of them.

This will not make it overwhelming so you can actually stick to it and you should be able to find the time in your day to think about just one point.

Start.

I. Set Clear Goals

Define your objectives and create a roadmap to reach them.

Having a clear vision of where you want to go will help you stay on track.

Choose a project.

The end result is your goal.

The steps to reach that big goal are your objectives.

Together, this makes it your vision.

Example:

End goal = Loose 10kg of fat and gain 10kg of muscle • Feeling good in my body.

Objectives (level 1) = Healthy eating habits • Do weightlifting 5 times a week • Walk for an hour 4 times a week.

Objectives (level 2) = Throw away all the junk food from the house • Sign up for a gym membership • When ever I watch Netflix, it has to be while walking outside.

You can break down each of those tasks into smaller subtasks and those subtasks into even smaller actionable steps.

II. Start Small

Begin with manageable tasks that you can consistently complete.

Building discipline is like building a muscle; it takes time and incremental progress.

Perhaps just going to the gym makes you feel sick to your stomach.

Well, the first step would be putting shoes on and walking out the door.

You can surely manage that.

III. Eliminate Distractions

Identify your biggest distractions and take measures to reduce them.

Whether it's turning off notifications, blocking certain websites, or creating a dedicated workspace, minimizing distractions can work wonders.

Example:

Have a dedicated room or a corner in your house where you only do work. There should be nothing that doesn’t help your workflow.

Permanently turn off notifications from all social media apps on your devices. Why would you need to be notified when someone liked your post anyway.

Fill up your water bottle and prepare your snack before you start so you don’t have any excuse to stop working.

IV. Develop Routines

Establish daily routines and habits that align with your goals.

When discipline becomes a part of your daily life, it becomes easier to maintain.

This could be your morning routine:

Wake up.

Jump from bed.

Drink a glass of water.

Go to the toilet. Brush your teeth.

Sit down for 2 hours to do your most important task of the day.

Go to the gym.

Stretch.

Do this every day for a while and you won’t need to try as hard anymore.

V. Stay Accountable

Share your goals with a friend, family member, or mentor who can hold you accountable.

The fear of letting someone down can be a powerful motivator.

Make a deal with your bf or gf saying that for every time you give up, you will clean the flat that week or cook and clean the dishes that day.

VI. Embrace Failure

Understand that failure is a part of the process.

Don't let setbacks discourage you.

Learn from them and keep moving forward.

Don’t use failures as excuses to stop pushing forward.

VII. Practice Self Compassion

Be kind to yourself.

Discipline isn't about self-punishment but about self-improvement.

Treat yourself with patience and understanding.

Discipline is a skill that can be cultivated over time.

It's not something you're born with or without.

Start today with small, consistent steps, and watch how your life evolves.
